From Praise to Rage: Conservative Response to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Divided.

Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.

Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric

Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction process.

Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections

While Trump's identity and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about what may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded greater openness.

“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.

Some Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure

However, some rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.

The release—from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.

But some do not, including prominent figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, enabled some rightwing figures to go on the offensive.

“This is quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Clinton Campaign Releases Response

Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.

“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.

Overall Conservative Comment Seems Muted

However, broader discourse on the right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a bill mandating the files' release.

The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were provided physical folders of files that contained little previously unseen information.
